How to speed up your nail polish drying time?

5 min to read

There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing your manicure ruined simply because you didn’t wait long enough for it to dry completely. Were the layers too thick? Was the room too warm or too humid? Was the polish itself poor quality? Here are all the tips and best practices to help your polish dry quickly and evenly, because a flawless manicure starts with perfect drying.

The factors that influence how long nail polish takes to dry

Choosing the right polish

Not all nail polishes dry the same way, and it all comes down to their chemical formulation. Traditional polish and Gel Polish require very different drying methods and times. A regular polish dries in open air as the solvents evaporate, usually within 3 to 10 minutes. Gel Polish, on the other hand, needs to be cured under a UV lamp and takes around 15 to 20 minutes to dry fully.

For a quick, nail-friendly manicure with no compromise on quality, opt for a bio-sourced polish. With Green™ polish by Manucurist, you tick all the boxes:

  • a formula that's vegan and up to 83% bio-sourced,

  • dries in just 1 minute,

  • offers ultra-pigmented colour (over 100 shades to choose from!),

  • gives you a gel-like shine without a UV lamp,

  • and lasts perfectly for up to 7 days.

Green™, the bio-sourced polish (up to 83%), long-lasting and dry-to-touch in 1 minute without a lamp.

The thickness of each coat: a small detail that changes everything

If you’re new to nail polish or applying a sheer or light shade, it’s easy to overdo it. The result? Thick layers that take forever to dry. Even worse: the surface might feel dry, but underneath it’s still soft, making your polish prone to smudging at the slightest touch. A mistake to avoid at all costs.

Temperature and humidity: drying’s worst enemies

Even with a high-quality polish and flawless application, drying can still take longer if your environment isn’t quite right. Temperature and humidity levels are key to helping your manicure dry properly.

For example, polish will struggle to dry in a very humid room, like a steamy bathroom. The same goes for cold spaces, where solvent evaporation is slowed. On the flip side, if it’s too hot, the drying may be uneven.

👉 The ideal setup? A dry, well-ventilated room with an ambient temperature of around 20 to 22°C.

For flawless drying and a perfect finish, make sure your environment has the right temperature and humidity.

Our tips for a manicure that dries quickly AND lasts longer

Fast-drying polish is great... but polish that also lasts? Even better. You can easily achieve both at home with a few simple yet effective steps, following a four-part routine.

1. Start with proper nail prep

Reducing drying time starts with proper nail preparation before you apply your colour. If your nail surface isn’t clean, smooth and grease-free, your polish won’t adhere evenly, which can slow down drying time.

Begin by filing your nails using a natural nail file to give them a consistent shape and length – square, oval or almond, the choice is yours (see our guide here).

Next, move on to cuticle care by applying some Cuticle Softener to gently soften them. Then push them back using a steel cuticle pusher or a wooden stick.

Gently buff the nail surface with a buffer sponge to smooth imperfections and open the keratin scales, which helps the polish grip better.

Finally, remove any oils or residue with a cotton pad soaked in Nail Prep, which is 94.5% bio-sourced.

Nail prep is the first essential step to reducing drying time.

2. Apply a base coat that’s right for your nails

A base coat is a must before applying any colour – it’s what makes polish adhere properly and stay in place. Without it, your polish may slide around, take longer to dry and be more prone to chips.

The Green™ Base Coat is enriched with Hexanal, a patented active ingredient that helps bond keratin proteins together, strengthening and protecting the nail. It also improves wear. Apply it in a thin layer from the base to the tip of each nail.

💡Tip: If your nails are weak, brittle, ridged or damaged, swap your base coat for a treatment base that suits your needs. You can discover your nail type and the most suitable care products with our quick online quiz.

3. Apply your colour in thin coats

This is the key step that really determines how quickly your polish dries. Colour should always be applied in thin, even layers. It might be tempting to go back over an area to perfect it, but doing so can thicken the layer and slow down drying.

Use the three-stroke technique: one brushstroke down the centre of the nail, then one on each side.

For intense, pigmented colour, apply two thin coats of Green™ polish. Be sure the first coat is completely dry before adding the second. Each polish features a professional-grade, rounded brush that perfectly hugs the shape of your nail for an easy at-home application.

Thin layers and three brushstrokes are the secret to flawless, quick-drying colour.

4. Finish with top coat and drying drops

The final step in the Green™ routine is the Sunshine Top Coat, which seals in your colour and extends its wear. Its unique formula contains photo-initiators that react to natural light for express drying and a gel-like shine. Apply a thin coat using the same three-stroke method.

Then comes the game changer: Drying Drops, Manucurist’s innovation that speeds up drying time. In just 1 minute, your Green™ polish is dry to the touch. Enriched with ceramides, these drops also nourish the nail contour. Thanks to the push-button applicator, one drop per nail is all it takes for quick and precise application.

Seal your manicure beautifully with Sunshine Top Coat and Drying Drops.

Although Drying Drops significantly speed up the process, drying isn’t instant like it is with Gel Polish cured under a lamp, so avoid touching your nails for a few minutes after application.

You’ll find all the essentials of the Green™ routine in our Starter Kits: Nail Prep, Base Coat, Sunshine Top Coat and Drying Drops, along with 1, 3 or 5 shades of your choice for a quick, easy and long-lasting manicure, just like the pros.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait between two coats of polish?

For classic polish, wait around 2 to 3 minutes between each layer to ensure the first is dry to the touch. This applies when applying thin layers over a properly prepped nail with a base coat. If the coat is too thick, allow at least 4 to 5 minutes to avoid any creasing or smudging.

How do I know if my polish is dry?

To test whether your polish is dry, gently touch it with the back of another nail. If it doesn’t feel sticky, you’re good to go. Bear in mind, a polish can seem dry on the surface but remain soft underneath. It’s best to wait at least 3 minutes if you’ve applied thin coats correctly. Avoid using your fingertip, as it might leave a mark. And for a stress-free finish, always add a top coat and drying drops. With Manucurist’s Drying Drops, Green™ polish is dry in just 1 minute.
