Why is filing your nails so important?
It’s easy to think that using a nail file is purely about aesthetics, but that’s far from the truth: this simple act is the foundation of nail care. Here’s why regular filing is so beneficial:
- To improve polish longevity: A clean, smooth nail edge is key to a uniform application. Well-filed nails prevent your polish from chipping after just a few days!
- To prevent cracks and breaks: Smooth, rounded nail edges are less prone to splitting or snagging, ensuring healthy nails with a shape perfectly tailored to your personal style.
In short, clean and neatly filed nails are your ticket to a flawless look and impeccable nail health!
When should you file your nails?
Knowing the right time to file your nails can be tricky. Don’t worry—no need to wait for a full moon or Mercury retrograde! Just keep these simple rules in mind, depending on your nail shape, type, and routine:
- Before a manicure: Filing is the first step in preparing your nails. Before applying polish or nail art, it’s essential to file them into the desired shape (short rounded nails, oval, square, almond, or stiletto for longer nails) while respecting your nail type. For thin or thick nails, adjust the file’s grit and pressure accordingly. Avoid harsh back-and-forth motions, especially if your nails are fragile.
- Outside of manicures: Weekly filing is a must for hand nails! For short nails, you can file up to twice a week. For long nails, once a week is enough to maintain their shape and prevent cracks. For toenails, filing every two weeks is ideal for maintaining a comfortable length.
Pro tip: File your nails after a shower or bath when keratin is softer. This makes the process easier and reduces the risk of breaking your nails.
Which nail file should you use and how?
Our nail experts agree: a quality nail file makes all the difference. Here are our best tools and tips for healthy nails:
The white file for natural nails
With its dual-grit design (180 on the Manucurist logo side and 100 on the back), we call this the “all-terrain file.” The white nail file for natural nails is an essential tool with two complementary functions:
- The fine-grit side (180) is perfect for hand nails, offering precise and gentle filing.
- The coarse-grit side (100) is ideal for shortening toenails or refining thick nails.
How to use it: Hold the file perpendicular to your nail and file in a gentle arc. Start with the outer edges and work towards your desired shape (square, round, almond, stiletto, etc.). Avoid filing the nail surface, as this can weaken them—save that for a preparation buffer.
The prep file
Like the white file, the prep file features two grit levels: the logo side offers a fine grit (280), while the reverse side has a coarser grit (220). With its sponge-like texture, it’s ideal for smoothing out imperfections and creating micro-grooves in the nail keratin, improving polish or treatment adhesion.
Steps to follow: After pushing back your cuticles, use the fine-grit side on your nails to smooth ridges. Use the coarse-grit side for toenails. Then, clean off any residue with a dusting brush and apply a little degreaser (before Green™ polish) or gentle remover (before Green Flash™ gel polish) for a flawless finish!
Our expert tips for flawless filing:
🙅 Don’t overdo it: A good file, like Manucurist’s, is enough to shorten and shape your nails without excessive force.
⏳ Take your time: Gentle, slow motions are better than quick, aggressive filing, especially for fragile or brittle nails.
⚒️ Maintain your tools: Clean, well-kept files ensure a perfect manicure and impeccable hygiene.
Adopting a regular filing routine gives your nails the best foundation. Whether for hands or feet, short or long nails, it’s essential to use quality tools with care and precision. With Manucurist’s range of files, your nails will be not only beautiful but also strong and ready to shine!
