Aura Nails: Our Most Beautiful Designs and How to Achieve Them

6 min to read

Pink blush, blue orange, deep purple or witchy green, aura nails go all in on colour and originality to give your nails real character. Discover this gradient nail art trend, our inspirations and the technique for easily creating aura nails at home. It's your turn to create the aura that feels like you!

What are aura nails?

After a few seasons dominated by minimalist manicures, aura nails are once again taking nail bars by storm and putting colour back at the centre of attention. Their defining feature? A diffused halo of colour at the heart of the nail, giving the impression that a luminous aura is spreading across the surface.

The principle is simple: one shade acts as the base, then one or more polish colours are blended into the centre of the nail through a gradual gradient. The result can be very soft or, conversely, boldly graphic. That's exactly what makes aura nails so appealing: the technique stays the same, but the possibilities for nail designs are  endless.

Aura nails belong to the wider family of gradient nail art , but shouldn't be confused with a simple colour gradient. In a classic ombré manicure, colours typically flow from one edge of the nail to the other. With aura-effect nails, the colour creates a luminous halo at the centre of the nail, giving an illusion of depth , then gradually fades towards the edges.

The advantage is that you can play with two, three or four colours, depending on the intensity you're after.

Delicate pastels, bold flashy colours, deep shades or combined with nail art patterns: every aura has its own mood! (@look8thenails, @matejanova, @cristinaccalvo)

Soft aura nails for everyday wear

Love this nail design but want an easy-to-wear version? Start with colour pairings that are close together or lightly contrasted. The result will make an impact without being too over-the-top.

Pastel aura: Pink Aura

For pink aura nails that look like they've been given a pretty flush of blush, go for Hortencia as a base, then create a halo by combining Hortencia and Neon Pink. The secret to keeping that hazy effect? Don't overload the sponge with colour. Several light passes let you gradually build up the halo and keep a nicely controlled blend.

Orange aura: Mango Aura

Bring on the sunshine with Abricot as a base and an Abricot and Sunset duo for the halo. This combination works particularly well on short or rounded nails: the colour instantly adds depth to the manicure, with no need for an extra pattern.

Blue aura: Ocean Glow Aura

Fancy mermaid-style aura nails? Apply Bubble as a base and play with Bubble and Pop to create the aura. The ideal combination for an ultra-fresh, on-trend result. Blue shades are particularly interesting for playing with depth.

On a pastel base, go for a bolder shade at the centre to accentuate the depth effect. (@m.o.n.a.j, @cristinaccalvo, @look8thenails)

Bold aura nails

Prefer manicures that get noticed? Good news: aura nails lend themselves wonderfully well to bold colour pairings.

Sunset aura: Aura Red Orange

Why choose just one colour when you can create a flamboyant sunset on your fingertips? Alternate Capucine, Coral Reef, Abricot and Spicy as base and aura shades to compose a warm gradient inspired by the shifting colours of a sunset. Here, each nail can have its own combination. No need to look for perfect symmetry: it's precisely the mix of shades that creates this lovely effect.

Burgundy aura: Deep Purple Aura

Purple tones bring a more sophisticated dimension to aura nails. Use Grenat as a base, then Grenat and Bois de Rose to create a gradient as deep and heady as a fine vintage wine.

Halloween aura

As Halloween approaches, aura nails join the party. Here are two variations:

  • Bloody Aura: for a dark, romantic result, go for Licorice as a base and mix this polish colour with Red Velvet at the centre.
  • Witchy Aura : for a "magic potion" style aura, apply Poison as a base and create a halo effect with Poison andMint for an unexpected... and bewitching contrast!

Attention colour addicts: aura nails are the ideal nail art for experimenting with contrast effects and bold colour combinations. (@look8thenails, @m.o.n.a.j, @shanivynails, @mani.minimalist)

Aura nails with a twist

The great thing about aura nails is that they don't stop at a simple halo of colour. Once you've mastered the technique, you can pair your aura nails with a French manicure, patterns or graphic details. Anything goes!

Aura & French: Guava Aura

Bring back the Hortencia & Neon Pink duo that creates that lovely Pink aura effect, and add Lime along the free edge of the nails for a distinctly punchy anise-green French manicure . The result keeps the characteristic halo of aura nails while adding a small graphic touch. A great option for anyone who wants to try the aura trend without giving up the structure of a French.

Fruity aura: Passion Fruit Aura

For a vitamin-boosted manicure, start with Candy as a base, then Candy and Neon Pink at the centre. Then draw a few little "seeds" over the top with Mimosa and Clove. The result? A passion fruit, nail art style! A playful idea that proves aura nails can be the starting point for slightly more elaborate patterns.

Aura & hearts: Valentine's Day Aura

What if we added a touch of fun to the aura effect? Here, the duo Hortencia and Rose is dressed up with little hearts drawn in Snow for a manicure that's so romantic, ideal for Valentine's Day nails ! The pattern can be placed at the centre of the nail, slightly off-centre, or used on just a few fingers. It's up to you how much detail you want!

Let's play with colours! Mix and match your aura nails with other nail art patterns as much as you like. (@look8thenails, @cristinaccalvo)

How to create aura nails at home

Good news: aura nails are a completely accessible nail design that's fairly easy to create at home, using classic nail polish or Gel Polish.

?? The magic tool to achieve this is the nail art sponge. It lets you apply colour gradually and create that famous diffused halo for a perfect gradient with no hard lines between colours. The Manucurist nail art sponge is made from an ultra-fine foam that ensures even blending for a salon-worthy result.

??Let's get practical with our step-by-step tutorial:

#1 Prep your nails : this is the step you shouldn't skip to ensure your aura nails turn out well. File your nails to give them a nice shape. Gently push back your cuticles. Then mattify the surface to open up the keratin layers and optimise polish adhesion. Finally, clean and degrease your nails to remove any sebum and dust.

#2 Apply your polish: start by applying a layer of Green™ or Green Flash™ Base Coat and leave it to dry, either air-drying or curing under an LED lamp depending on the type of polish chosen. Then apply the Green™ or Green Flash™ colour that will act as your base and let it dry fully.

#3 Create the halo: on the nail art sponge, use the tip of your brush to apply a touch of your central polish colour (often the lightest one). Surround it with a circular brushstroke of the secondary colour (often the colour used as your base), leaving no gap between the two. Gently dab the centre of the nail to create the halo, without trying to achieve an intense colour straight away. Repeat several times to control the intensity and achieve an even gradient.

#4 Clean up any overspill left by the sponge with a corrector pen or a cotton bud soaked in gentle polish remover.

#5 Finish the manicure by applying a layer of top coat to protect your nail art and add a touch of shine. Use the top coat suited to your nail polish: Top Coat Sunshine (lasts 7 days) on Green™ nail polish, Top Coat Green Flash™ (lasts 12 days) or Xtrem Flash™ (lasts 21 days) on Green Flash™ Gel Polish.

Choosing your colours to match your aura

To create successful aura nails, the choice of colours matters just as much as the technique. For a subtle result, go for two closely related shades : pink and bright pink, light blue and deeper blue, orange and coral. For a more contrasted aura effect, combine two different colour families.

If you're just starting out, begin with two colours. Once you've mastered the technique, gradually add a third shade, then patterns or a French.

You can also start with a colour you love and build your palette around it : a light shade as a base, a more intense colour at the centre, then possibly a third shade to enrich the halo.

⚠️ Careful : don't try to replicate an inspiration exactly. The same colour duo can give a completely different result depending on the amount of polish applied, the size of the halo or the number of sponge passes. Aura nails are meant to be personalised!

As you'll have gathered, aura nails offer a multitude of possibilities: pastel and delicate, vitamin-boosted and colourful, more intense, or given a twist with a French. Proof that a single technique can give rise to completely different manicures. To get started, pick two colours you love and find inspiring, grab your nail art sponge, and let the magic of colour guide you.
